Why you need sunscreen in Winter
June
15
to 31 July

Why you need sunscreen in Winter

Just because you can’t see or feel the sun this Winter doesn’t mean that you’re not being affected by UV rays. Sunburn can develop within 15 minutes of being in the Australian sun. We delve into why you need to keep putting on sunscreen during Winter.

What is sunscreen?

Sunscreen helps to protect your skin from the damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun. There are two different types of UV levels, which are ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB). UVA rays damage your skin cells, which can cause premature ageing and some types of skin cancer. UVB rays cause sunburn.

When do I need to use sunscreen?

In many parts of Australia, UV levels are level three or above during the Winter months.

This means that the UV index is moderate and that you need to take extra steps to protect your skin, including sunscreen, staying out of the sun and wearing a hat.

Many people use a UV index which can tell you the times during the day where you might need extra sun protection. You can find the UV levels in your city by checking the UV index through the Bureau of Meteorology.

How can I add sunscreen into my daily routine?

You can add sunscreen into your daily routine by adding it to a habit that you’ve already built, like brushing your teeth or after you’ve moisturised your skin. Cetaphil promotes a routine of CMP – Cleanse, Moisturise and Protect.

It’s best to use a sunscreen that is SPF 30 and above, waterproof and broad spectrum.

Broad-spectrum sunscreen means that you’re protected against the harmful rays of both UVA and UVB.

Cetaphil Daily Defence Cream SPF 50 found at Blooms The Chemist - Windsor Marketplace protects your skin and provides a physical defence against UVA and UVB rays with 120 minutes of water resistance. It is a lightweight mineral formulation and is non-irritating and invisible. It’s designed for daily use on your face and neck and is dermatologist-tested for sensitive skin.

It’s important to use sunscreen correctly; apply sunscreen 20 minutes before you expose yourself to the sun, reapply after swimming or bathing, and stay sun-safe with UV protection sunglasses, protective clothing, and seeking shade.

More reasons to drink tea this Winter

to 20 June

More reasons to drink tea this Winter

For centuries, tea has been enjoyed as a comforting and refreshing beverage, whether sipped alone or shared with guests. But did you know that it also offers a variety of potential health benefits?

From reducing the risk of heart disease to improving your mental focus, drinking tea may have a positive impact on your overall health and wellbeing.

5 ways it can reduce your health risks

It has antioxidant properties

One of the main benefits of drinking tea is its antioxidant properties.

Tea contains polyphenols and antioxidants which help protect the body from damage caused by harmful molecules called free radicals. These can contribute to the development of chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.

Green tea, in particular, is high in polyphenols called catechins – potent antioxidants which could reduce the risk of these diseases.

May lower your risk of heart disease

Several studies have shown that drinking tea, especially green tea, may help lower cholesterol levels, reduce blood pressure and improve blood vessel function, all of which can contribute to a lower risk of heart disease.

One study found that drinking green tea for 12 weeks significantly lowered LDL cholesterol levels (the ‘bad’ cholesterol) in people with high cholesterol.

Another study found that people who drank three cups of tea per day had a 20% lower risk of heart disease than those who didn't drink tea.

May lower your risk of cancer

Research suggests that drinking tea may help to reduce the risk of certain types of cancer. For example, one study found that women who drank green tea had a 22% lower risk of breast cancer than those who didn't drink tea.

Other studies have suggested that drinking tea may also help reduce the risk of lung, prostate, and colorectal cancer.

However, more research is needed to confirm these findings and determine the optimal amount and type of tea for cancer prevention.

May lower your risk of diabetes

Some research indicates that drinking tea may help to reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by improving insulin sensitivity and reducing inflammation.

Green tea, in particular, has been shown to help improve glucose metabolism and reduce insulin resistance. A study found that people who drank green tea for eight weeks had significant improvements in insulin sensitivity compared to those who didn't drink green tea.

May help to reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases

Drinking tea may help to reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Tea contains compounds with neuroprotective properties, which may help protect the brain from damage and reduce the risk of cognitive decline.

One research study found that drinking tea was associated with a lower risk of cognitive impairment in older adults. Another found that drinking green tea may help improve cognitive function in people with mild cognitive impairment.

5 ways tea can also improve your wellbeing

Can provide clearer mental focus

Tea contains caffeine, a natural stimulant which can help improve mental focus and alertness. The amount of caffeine in tea is generally lower than in coffee, so it may provide a milder, calmer energy boost.

Additionally, tea contains an amino acid called L-theanine, which has been shown to promote relaxation and reduce stress. When combined with caffeine, L-theanine can help to improve cognitive performance and mental clarity, particularly in middle-aged and older people.

Can aide with digestion

Certain types of tea, such as 'ginger' and 'peppermint', have been shown to help improve digestion and reduce stomach discomfort. Find these at Blooms The Chemist - Windsor Marketplace.

Peppermint tea may help relieve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a common digestive disorder which can cause abdominal pain, bloating, and diarrhoea or constipation.

One study found that people with IBS who drank peppermint tea experienced significant reductions in abdominal pain and bloating.

Can keep you hydrated

Drinking tea can help to keep you hydrated, which is important for maintaining healthiness and overall wellbeing.

While some people may believe that drinking tea can be dehydrating because it contains caffeine, research has shown that the water content in tea more than offsets any potential diuretic effect.

Drinking tea may be an especially good option for people who don't enjoy drinking plain water, as it can help them stay hydrated while also providing a range of potential health benefits.

Can support your immune system

Tea contains compounds called catechins, which have antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties.

These properties may help support the immune function and reduce the risk of infections.

Drinking tea has been associated with a lower risk of flu and other respiratory infections and may help to improve immune function in people with autoimmune diseases.

May provide weight-loss benefits

Drinking tea may have potential weight-loss benefits due to the presence of compounds which may help boost the metabolism and increase fat-burning. This could potentially aid in weight loss; however, drinking tea alone is unlikely to result in significant weight loss.

Whether enjoyed hot or cold, tea can be a refreshing and satisfying beverage that also offers a range of potential health benefits.

Opt for high-quality loose-leaf teas and avoid adding sugar or other sweeteners that can negate those benefits.

What are you waiting for? It's time for tea!

Tea can help you meet your daily fluid recommendations and is also a source of antioxidants, but it should be drank in moderation.

It's important to remember that the size of the cup you're drinking tea out of, the strength of your tea and your family health history can all play a part as to whether or not you see the benefits of tea-drinking.

However, if you want a cosy way to warm up and already drink tea, you may be getting health benefits you weren't aware of.

Put your best foot forward this Summer
Feb
5
to 15 Mar

Put your best foot forward this Summer

Hot Summer weather provides the optimal conditions for many common foot problems to arise. That’s why it’s important to prioritise foot health to prevent disease, injury, as well as dry and cracked heels.

Here are some top tips from Blooms The Chemist on how to keep your feet healthy and comfortable during the Summer:

  • Avoid being barefoot and wear footwear in all public spaces, especially pool areas, communal showers and beaches

    • Your feet are used to being in supportive comfortable shoes during Winter, so suddenly going from this to thongs or nothing could make your feet more prone to injury.

    • It’s essential to wear footwear in places, such as pools and communal showers, to protect your feet from bacteria, germs and contagious viruses. This is also a good idea for hot surfaces, such as sand, to prevent injury to the sole of the foot.

  • Ensure you apply sunscreen to your feet

    • Australia is one of the top countries in the world for sunburn and skin cancer. The tops of the feet are one of the most common places to get sun burnt as many people forget to apply sunscreen in this area. To protect your skin and prevent skin cancer, it’s essential to apply sunscreen (SPF 50+ is recommended) to your feet in the Summer, especially when there are high UV levels.

  • Apply moisturising heel balm daily

    • In the Summer, wearing non-supportive footwear or going barefoot, as well as standing for extended periods of time, can lead to dry and cracked heels. Over time, these cracks can deepen and start to bleed, which can lead to infection.

QV’s Feet Heel Balm comprises alpha hydroxy acid and rich moisturisers to help revive the appearance of dry and cracked heels. The balm has a low-irritant formulation and is free from fragrance, colour, lanolin and propylene glycol. For effective results, the balm should be applied twice a day, morning and night, until the skin has returned to normal. Once healed, the balm can be applied two to three times a week to continue maintaining healthy skin.

You can visit your local Blooms The Chemist - Windsor Marketplace for advice if you’re concerned about your foot health.

Christmas Gifts Under $20 Gift Guide

Christmas Gifts Under $20 Gift Guide

We can all relate to that time of year when work and personal life are at their busiest, and all anyone can think about is kicking back and relaxing over the holiday season. The excitement is starting to bubble up, and maybe, like many of us, it’s impossible not to start planning for Christmas.

'Tis the season to soak up the sun, spend quality time with friends and family, and show loved ones how much they’re appreciated with gifts that speak the language of love.

The only challenge? Finding the perfect gift while keeping to a budget.

But there’s no need to worry—gift-giving isn’t about how much is spent; it’s about the thought and care behind it. That’s why we’ve put together a list of favourite Natio gift sets (all under $20!) that are perfect for showing love to those who matter most.

Mother / Mother-in-Law / Grandmothers

Starting off strong with one of the trickiest groups to buy for: mothers, mothers-in-law, and grandmothers.

When mums want something, they usually just buy it themselves—making gift-giving a bit of a challenge. That’s why a thoughtful gift that shows appreciation and encourages a little self-care is perfect this festive season.

The Gentle Gift Set ($14.95) is ideal for reminding her to carve out some ‘me-time’—or for giving you the perfect excuse to spend quality time together while treating her to a relaxing hand massage and manicure. The set includes an Aromatherapy Antioxidant Hand & Nail Cream 100ml and a 2-in-1 emery board to hydrate, soothe, and shape her hands.

Alternatively, the Admired Gift Set ($24.95) offers a subtle pop of colour with a pretty pink nail shade in Peony, paired with the Rosewater Hydration Moisture Rich Hand & Nail Cream—perfect for creating a luxe manicure at home.

Father / Father-in-Law / Grandfathers

Next up is the perfect gift for fathers, fathers-in-law, and grandfathers. Some dads aren’t big on shopping—they might still be wearing the same shirt they received as a present 10 years ago! That makes choosing a gift about balancing what they need with what they want.

This year, the Clean Gift Set ($16.95) is a top pick. It features a Daily Face Wash that removes dirt and grime—ideal for the outdoorsy dad (perfect for farmers or anyone who spends time outside). The set also includes a facial cleansing brush, giving him everything needed for a thorough, refreshing clean.

Girl Friends/Girlfriends/Sisters

When it comes to sisters and best friends, the gift has got to be just right. They’ve been there through the ups and downs, seen the worst moments (more than once!) and still stick around. The goal is a gift that says “I see you, and I love you”—without breaking the bank.

The Bubbly Gift Set ($9.95) hits the mark perfectly. It’s a thoughtful yet fun present that says “take care of your beautiful skin” while giving a nod to their well-loved (and well-used) beauty tools. Not only is it practical, it doubles as a cute Christmas decoration they’ll actually use and adore. The set includes three beauty blenders: a Complexion Perfection Foundation Sponge, a Teardrop Application Sponge, and an Angled Teardrop Blending Sponge—each with its own purpose to keep their makeup game on point.

Boy Friends/Boyfriends/Brothers

Little brothers might just be gifting hugs this Christmas, but finding something special for them is no easy task. The trick? Choosing a gift they probably wouldn’t think to buy for themselves—but will genuinely need and appreciate.

The Suave Gift Set ($14.95) is a winner. Featuring the Natio for Men Smooth Shave Gel and a shave brush, it’s practical, used multiple times a week, and makes life a little smoother—literally. It’s a thoughtful way to show the boys in your life you care, while giving them something they’ll actually enjoy and use.

Kris Kringle/Secret Santa

What do you get when you have no idea what to buy? And how do you choose a gift when you don’t even know who it’s for? Kris Kringle and Secret Santa gifts can be tricky—but there’s a fail-safe option that’s perfect for anyone and super affordable.

The Joy Gift Set ($16.95) is a go-to choice when the perfect gift feels impossible to find. It pairs the practical and pampering Wellness Shower and Bath Gel with a body loofah, packed with the antioxidant goodness of pure pomegranate and a scent that’s irresistible. It’s a thoughtful, easy gift that anyone will appreciate.

With the perfect presents all sorted, the stress of Christmas is completely gone. The excitement of seeing everyone’s faces light up when they open their gifts makes the festive season even more special. Find Natio Beauty at Blooms The Chemist - Windsor Makretplace.

to 6 Jan

Crackling ham with toffee crunch slaw

A festive show-stopper that will earn a spot on every holiday table. This beautiful, golden pastry wreath is filled with a savoury-sweet pumpkin and fetta filling.

Ingredients

1.50kg Woolworths boneless crackling leg ham

1/3 cup Woolworths extra virgin olive oil

439g pineapple chunks in syrup, drained, reserving syrup

1/3 cup caster sugar

1/4 Savoy cabbage, shredded

1/4 bunch mint, leaves picked, shredded

1/4 cup Woolworths pepitas, toasted

60g Woolworths honey macadamias, chopped

2 carrots, shredded

1 long red chilli, finely chopped

Directions

Step 1

Preheat oven to 240°C /220°C fan-forced. Line a roasting pan with foil. Pat ham rind dry with paper towel and place in prepared pan. Rub a pinch of salt into rind and drizzle with 2 tbs oil. Bake ham for 1 hour or until crackling is golden and crispy. Cover loosely with foil. Rest for 30 minutes.

Step 2

Meanwhile, line a baking tray with baking paper. Heat 1 tbs oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add pineapple and cook, turning occasionally, for 3-4 minutes or until browned. Transfer to a plate. Cool. Reduce heat to low. Add reserved syrup to pan along with sugar. Cook, stirring, for 1-2 minutes or until sugar dissolves. Increase heat and bring to a boil. Boil, without stirring, for 3 minutes or until a rich brown. Remove from heat. Allow bubbles to subside. Pour toffee over prepared tray. Set aside for 15 minutes or until set. Break into large shards.

Step 3

Place cabbage, mint, cooled pineapple, pepitas, macadamias and carrot in a large bowl. Add remaining oil and toss until combined. Place on a platter. Top with chilli and crumbled toffee. Serve ham with slaw.

5 skin saving tips this Summer

to 10 Dec

5 skin saving tips this Summer

Summer brings sunshine and warmer days, but it also means it’s time to give your skin a little extra care. Keep your skin looking its best with simple adjustments to your skincare routine that can go a long way.

Tip 1: SPF50+ is a must

SPF is important all year round, but especially in Summer when the UV index is higher than usual.

Give your skin a chance to breathe while getting the protection it needs with the  Cancer Council CC Cream. This CC cream combines 50+SPF with a moisturiser and a colour correcting tint, which can feel lighter on your skin without the greasy feel of sunscreen.

Tip 2: Get more out of your moisturiser

Summer brings sunshine but it also brings heat. This means that makeup, dirt and oil are more easily trapped in your pores.

With dirt in your pores comes break outs, which nobody wants. If you’re breaking out and freaking out, try switching to a non-pore-blocking (or noncomedogenic)  oil-free moisturiser and see if your skin loves the swap.

Tip 3: It can be fake (tan)

With two out of three Australians being diagnosed with some form of skin cancer during their lifetime, choosing fake tan is the safer choice for yourself and your skin 1.

If you haven’t applied fake tan before, it’s important to exfoliate before applying it as it can help remove dead skin and prevent any product clinging to dry areas.

Bondi Sands has a wide range of express self tanning face serums and foams that can help you quickly achieve your perfect Summer glow.

Tip 4: Stay hydrated, inside and out

Hydration can help you maintain your overall health during the warmer months while also keeping your skin looking fresh. We lose more water through sweating, which is why it’s important to drink an adequate amount of water to help your body stay hydrated while you’re enjoying the sun.

As the weather heats up, your skin will also need extra hydration. Consider using a hydrating serum, such as Avene Hydrance Booster Concentrated Hydrating Serum, which can provide up to 48 hours of hydration to dehydrated and sensitive skin. You can also explore our hydration heroes range here.

Tip 5: Don't forget about collagen

Collagen is integral to internal skin structures and can also help enhance skin firmness, skin elasticity and your overall skin health.

If you want to give your hair, skin, and nails nourishment where creams can’t reach,  Nature's Way Beauty Collagen for Mature Skin can help promote collagen formation and reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

White Christmas Pudding Cheesecake
Nov
15
to 10 Dec

White Christmas Pudding Cheesecake

It takes the best of a creamy, no-bake cheesecake and swirls it with the traditional flavours of Christmas pudding, mixed spice, cherries, and white chocolate. It's cool, it's creamy, and it's guaranteed to be the star of your Christmas table! Best of all? It’s a no-bake winner that keeps the kitchen cool while you prep for the big day.

Ingredients

Pudding:

  • 2 tsp mixed spice

  • 300ml thickened cream

  • 500g cream cheese

  • 1 tbs vanilla extract

  • 100g frozen or fresh cherries

  • 3 tsp gelatine powder

  • 100g matured fruit & cognac Christmas pudding

  • 2/3 cup caster sugar

  • 40g pistachios

Decorations:

  • 1/2 cup fresh cherries

  • 100g white chocolate

  • 40g pistachios

Directions

Step 1

Whip cream in a medium bowl until stiff peaks form. Cover and set aside in the fridge.

Step 2

Place gelatine with 1 1/2 tbs boiling water in a small bowl. Mix briefly to combine, then set aside.

Step 3

Line a 5-cup capacity pudding mould with two layers of baking paper, allowing it to overhang the sides.

Step 4

Place cream cheese in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with paddle attachment and beat until no lumps remain. Add sugar, vanilla and mixed spice and beat until fully combined, scraping down the edges and bottom as required. With mixer running, gradually beat in gelatine mixture until combined.

Step 5

Gently fold whipped cream into the cream cheese mixture. Fold in crumbled Christmas pudding, pistachios and chopped cherries. Working quickly, transfer mixture to prepared pudding basin. Smooth the top of the pudding with the back of a spoon and refrigerate for six hours or overnight until firm.

Step 6

When ready to serve, flip pudding onto a serving plate and remove baking paper. Drizzle with slightly cooled melted chocolate, sprinkle with chopped pistachios and whole and halved cherries.

How To Develop A Workout Habit In Three Easy Steps
Oct
9
to 10 Nov

How To Develop A Workout Habit In Three Easy Steps

By the time we reach our mid-fifties, many of us have developed a love-hate relationship with exercise. We know we should be doing it regularly and have, probably, had bouts when we’ve done just that. But then life gets in the way, and exercise drifts out of our lives for a few years.

But as we age, exercise becomes even more critical. Every year we lose testosterone, and with it, muscle mass. Many of us replace that muscle mass with body fat as we become increasingly sedentary, and our metabolism slows down. That puts increasing stress upon our heart and lungs.

Here are three easy steps that can help you develop a workout habit.

  1. Start slowly. Develop the exercise habit slowly. Start with walking. If you can, do it in the evening with your partner.

  2. Use the cue and reward method. To develop a habit, use the proven cue and reward method. This involves setting up the same cue/trigger for the new behaviour and then giving yourself a post-behaviour reward. For example, your cue could be having a glass of water after dinner. The reward could be to relax in your favourite armchair after the walk and listen to your music.

  3. Start strengthening. You may also choose to start doing bodyweight resistance training. There are just three exercises that you need to be doing to strengthen and build every muscle group in your body: Push-Ups, Pull-Ups and Bodyweight Squats. Perform these three moves as a circuit with no rest between them. Start with five push-ups, one pull-up, and ten squats. Rest for 30 seconds and then repeat the course. Do this three times per week, slowly building up your reps as your strength increases.

The exercise routines that we’ve outlined here will take no longer than 30 minutes per day. Persevere with them, using the cue/reward system to ingrain them into your lifestyle. The effort will pay off in a stronger, more muscular, and healthier you.

Inspired by their guide to developing a workout habit, Blooms The Chemist - Windsor Marketplace offers essentials to help you stay on track:

  • Magnesium supplements to support muscle recovery and reduce fatigue

  • Electrolyte powders for hydration after workouts

  • Joint support formulas to keep you moving comfortably

  • Protein shakes and bars for post-exercise nourishment
